cute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the single most common variable that can disrupt an otherwise perfect Himalayan riding expedition. Leh stands at an altitude of 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) above sea level, a threshold where the barometric pressure drops, resulting in significantly fewer oxygen molecules per breath than at sea level.
Understanding High Altitude Physiology
When you arrive in Leh, whether flying directly from Delhi or ascending rapidly over the passes, your body encounters hypoxia—a lack of oxygen reaching the tissues. The physiological symptoms of mild AMS include general fatigue, mild throbbing headache, lightheadedness, and insomnia. In its extreme and rare forms, it can progress to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), which is a serious medical emergency.
Our Meticulous First 48-Hour Protocol
Every Ride & Fire expedition enforces a strict, non-negotiable acclimation schedule upon arrival. Guests are required to spend the first 36 hours at complete rest in Leh. Our operational crew manages all bags, permit papers, and logistics while you relax in our boutique mountain lodge. This rest allows your bone marrow to begin producing red blood cells to adapt to the lower pressure.
The Essential Acclimatization Checklist
- Hydration is Paramount: Drink 4 to 5 liters of water daily. The dry mountain air evaporates body moisture rapidly through respiration.
- Avoid Stimulants: Refrain from alcohol, smoking, and heavy physical exercise during the first two days. Alcohol suppresses breathing and increases dehydration.
- Prophylactics (Consult a Doctor): Many riders benefit from taking Acetazolamide (Diamox), a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that speeds up acclimatization by increasing respiration rate.
- Continuous Monitoring: Our ride captains carry medical pulse oximeters. We monitor arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) daily; a normal resting rate at altitude is between 85% and 92%. If a rider falls below safe thresholds, we immediately administer high-flow oxygen.
